Preschool Portraits.
For the last few years, I have been lucky enough to do portraits for the preschool my youngest son attended. The idea of doing “school photos” was initially not very appealing to me because it felt so sterile and impersonal. But then I thought, well, maybe I can make it more fun. And if anyone knows how to have fun in life, it’s definitely preschoolers.
So that’s what I did. I showed up with a simple white backdrop, some window light, a friendly smile, all the patience and the best preschool jokes I could think of. (My husband also showed up, which is so helpful because he is a master at spreadsheets and improv). Did you know how hilarious it is to a 3-year-old when you ask them if they like dirt-flavored ice cream or if they can see the flying giraffe outside? And when all else fails, my weird faces seem to do the trick.
I try to keep it simple and as disarming as possible because kids are truly just so perfect as they are — and that’s what I want to capture in these portraits. The real kid who will, before you know it, be having their first day of kindergarten… and then, in a blink, be off to college. Time you dirty dog you.
Aren’t photos truly magic? What else exists in life that allows you to freeze time? And what an honor it is to be trusted with capturing these moments of innocence, sweetness, and total hilarity, too.
Thank you to all the parents of these sweet kids. I had the best time and I hope your kids did too.
